What most local businesses get wrong

Three reasons you're not in the 3-pack despite doing everything right

01
Your GBP is set up but never maintained

Having a Google Business Profile is not enough. Wrong primary category, missing service areas, outdated photos, no posts, incomplete attributes. Google ranks the most complete and active profiles. If yours hasn't been touched since you claimed it, you're handing the 3-pack to competitors who are actively managing theirs.

02
Your website doesn't signal where you actually operate

A city name in your title tag is not a local SEO strategy. Google needs dedicated service area pages, locally relevant content, consistent NAP data in structured markup, and clear signals connecting your business to specific locations. Without these, you rank for your brand name and almost nothing else.

03
Inconsistent business information is working against you

Dozens of directories list your business with slightly different addresses, phone numbers, or names. Google cross-references these citations to verify you are who you say you are. Inconsistencies create uncertainty, and uncertainty suppresses rankings. Most businesses have no idea this is happening and it costs them every day.

There's more to local SEO than optimizing your GBP

Most local SEO work stops after the basics. I find the gaps underneath: the ones actually deciding whether you're in position 1, position 3, or not in the map pack at all.

GBP requires ongoing management, not a one-time setup

Google actively rewards profiles with fresh photos, regular posts, consistent new reviews, and complete service listings. A profile last updated 2 years ago signals neglect. Competitors posting weekly and uploading photos monthly will outrank a stale profile in the same category, even if your business is objectively better.

One city page is not a local landing page strategy

If you serve 8 cities but have one page covering all of them, you rank in one city. Maybe. Each service area needs a dedicated page with unique content, location-specific signals, and proper internal linking. This is what gets you into the 3-pack and organic results across your full service area, not just your home city.

Citation building without cleanup makes things worse

Adding new citations on top of inconsistent existing ones doubles the noise Google has to resolve. Before building new citations, every existing listing needs to be found, verified, and corrected. Only then do new citations reinforce your local signals instead of compounding the confusion.

Most local businesses have zero local links

Local authority comes from location-based links: business associations, city guides, local press, community organizations, and partner sites. A generic SEO tool won't surface these opportunities. They require manual research specific to your market. Without local links, you're competing for the 3-pack with no authority advantage over anyone.

Competitor 3-pack analysis is rarely done properly

Most consultants run a rankings report. I analyze who is outranking you in the 3-pack, what specific signals they have that you don't, and what gaps exist in their strategy you can exploit. The 3-pack has 3 spots. Understanding exactly what it takes to hold one of them is where the strategy starts.

LocalBusiness schema is almost always missing or wrong

Most local businesses either have no schema or have generic markup that doesn't communicate their specific services, service areas, hours, or geographic relevance. Properly implemented LocalBusiness schema directly strengthens the signals Google uses for local rankings and 3-pack eligibility.

How I approach local SEO

Every engagement starts with an audit of your specific situation. I don't apply a generic checklist. I identify the actual gaps in your local presence and build a fix plan in the right order.

Step 01

Local SEO Audit

I review your GBP health, website local signals, existing citations, current rankings, and what your top local competitors are doing that you are not. Every finding is prioritized by impact.

Step 02

GBP Optimization

Primary and secondary category selection, full service area definition, attribute completion, keyword-optimized description, photo strategy, and Google Posts plan. This is the fastest lever in local SEO and where most businesses leave rankings on the table.

Step 03

Keyword Research and Landing Page Strategy

I identify every high-intent local query your customers use and map them to pages that need to be created or improved. Each service area gets a page plan with keyword targets, content direction, and internal linking structure.

Step 04

Citation Audit and Cleanup

First, I audit every existing citation and fix inconsistencies. Then I build presence in the directories Google uses to verify local businesses in your category. Skipping the cleanup step and building on top of bad data does not work.

Step 05

Local Link Acquisition

I research and pursue link opportunities specific to your location: business associations, local directories, local press, and relevant partner sites. These build authority in your specific market, not just broadly.

Step 06

Tracking and Reporting

Monthly reporting on GBP insights (views, clicks, calls, direction requests), local keyword rankings, citation health, and lead metrics. You see exactly what moved and what the next priority is.

Frequently asked questions

What does local SEO actually include?
Local SEO covers Google Business Profile optimization, local keyword research, local landing page creation, citation building and cleanup, NAP consistency across directories, local link acquisition, and review strategy. It also includes technical and on-page work specifically targeting location-based queries. The goal is to rank in both the Google 3-pack and organic results for high-intent searches in your service area.
How long does it take to rank in the Google 3-pack?
For competitive markets, meaningful movement in the 3-pack typically takes 3 to 6 months. Less competitive niches or locations can move faster. The legal firm in Toronto reached 38+ money keywords in TOP 10 within 3 to 4 months of launching a brand new site. Timeline depends on your starting point, how competitive your market is, and how quickly foundational issues can be resolved.
How do you optimize a Google Business Profile?
A proper GBP optimization covers primary and secondary category selection, full service area definition, keyword-rich business description, complete attribute setup, regular photo uploads, Google Posts, Q&A management, and review response strategy. Most businesses set up their profile once and never return to it. An active, complete GBP consistently outranks neglected profiles in the same niche.
What are local landing pages and do I need them?
Local landing pages are dedicated pages targeting a specific city or service area. A plumber in Chicago needs separate pages for Chicago, Oak Park, Evanston, and every surrounding city they serve. Each page needs unique content that signals relevance to that location. Without them, your site can rank for your primary city but will be invisible for every surrounding area where customers are also searching.
Do you work with businesses that have multiple locations?
Yes. Multi-location SEO requires managing multiple GBP listings, building out location-specific landing pages for each branch, ensuring consistent citations across all locations, and building local authority in each market independently. I have experience managing 15+ listings simultaneously across different cities and countries.
What are the deliverables from a local SEO engagement?
Deliverables depend on the scope but typically include: a full local SEO audit, GBP optimization, local keyword research report, local landing page structure and copy, citation audit and cleanup plan, local link building strategy, and monthly reporting on rankings, GBP insights, and lead metrics. Everything is built to be maintained long-term without relying on me for every update.
